Exercise induced collapse

EIC is an inherited autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease causing collapse originating in the pelvic limbs.  This disease occurs in various breeds of dogs, most notably young hunting or field trial Labrador Retrievers.  It does not occur in cats.  Dogs are normal prior to strenuous exercise.  During an episode of collapse, there is muscle weakness and body temperatures may reach 107*F.  A blood test is available to diagnose EIC in the Labrador Retriever, Labrador cross, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, Boykin Spaniel, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, English Cocker Spaniel, Vizsla, American Cocker Spaniel, Bouvier des Flanders, Old English Sheep Dog, and German Wirehaired Pointer.  The test results will determine if the dog is affected or a carrier of the disease but not affected.  This information is important for the individual dog as well as for their future breeding potential.
